Before every season, I’ve helped the Steelers ingest, manage, and process hundreds of keyed clips from their media day shoots. Scroll down and we’ll get into the details.

The solution

The Steelers media team shoots all their player introductory shots, social media callouts, and other player scoreboard assets over the course of 3 days. At the time of production, the Steelers have more players than the normal 52-man roster so there is a lot of footage to process.

In order to key hundreds of clips as quickly as possible, I developed strategies and workflows that let the footage be ingested and processed as efficiently as possible. I use a combination of post production pipelines, industry-tested VFX keying techniques, and overnight batch rendering that meets strict deadlines but doesn’t sacrifice on quality – because details matter.

An easy to understand naming convention and database were developed to organize all player clips by name, number, action, audio, and so on. Often, the total number of all individual clips each season will average around 280 clips! Once the files are turned over to the Steelers, they are able to reference this database and easily find what is needed.
